India’s Petroleum Product Exports Hit Record High in 2025

India recorded its highest-ever exports of petroleum products in 2025, overcoming significant global headwinds such as Western sanctions on Russian oil and disruptions caused by challenges in the Suez Canal route. Strong refining margins in international markets played a key role in driving this growth, aided by shifts in global energy trade amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict.

Petroleum exports, which contribute more than 10 per cent to India’s total merchandise exports by value, continued to perform strongly despite rising geopolitical tensions. This expansion came even as the European Union imposed sanctions on a major private-sector Indian refiner and on fuels produced using Russian crude oil.

Industry data indicates that Indian refiners benefited from increased availability of transport fuels from newly commissioned refining capacities. This allowed private refiners to divert larger volumes for export markets while meeting domestic demand.

Reliance Industries emerged as a major contributor to this surge. According to figures compiled by maritime intelligence firm Kpler, India’s fuel exports reached a record level of approximately 1.28 million barrels per day (bpd) in 2025, marking a 4 per cent increase compared to the previous year.

Analysts note that resilient refining operations, competitive pricing, and sustained global demand helped India strengthen its position as a key exporter of refined petroleum products, even amid sanctions and logistical bottlenecks affecting global energy flows.
