New Delhi: Actor and BJP MP Kangana Ranaut has criticised veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah over his recent remarks about the silence of Bollywood celebrities during the ongoing student protests in Jharkhand.

The controversy began after Naseeruddin Shah questioned why several prominent film personalities had not spoken publicly about the protests. Referring to the silence of celebrities, Shah used an analogy involving a dog holding a bone, suggesting that those with something in their mouths cannot speak until they lose it.

Actor and singer Piyush Mishra subsequently responded to Shah’s remarks while interacting with students protesting in Ranchi. Mishra questioned who the “dogs with bones in their mouths” were in the context of the current agitation.

Kangana Ranaut then joined the exchange through a post on Instagram. Sharing a report about Mishra’s remarks, she defended the idea of being called a “dog”, describing loyalty as a positive quality. She also took a direct swipe at Shah, saying she would rather be a dog than a “fox” in reference to the veteran actor.

Ranaut has previously criticised aspects of the student-led protests, particularly over alleged abusive remarks directed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi during some demonstrations.

The Jharkhand protests are centred on allegations of irregularities in recruitment examinations conducted by the Jharkhand Public Service Commission (JPSC) and Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission (JSSC). Protesters have been demanding the cancellation of the 14th JPSC examination and an independent investigation into the matter.

The agitation has continued for several weeks, with some aspirants also undertaking hunger strikes. Talks between representatives of the protesting students and the Jharkhand government have so far failed to produce a final resolution.

The state government has said that the concerns raised by the aspirants will be examined, while Chief Minister Hemant Soren has stressed the importance of dialogue and transparency.

The exchange between Kangana Ranaut, Naseeruddin Shah and Piyush Mishra has now added a fresh political and Bollywood dimension to the ongoing debate surrounding the Jharkhand student protests.
