“Extremely Disturbing”: Priyanka Gandhi Regarding the Lynching of a Hindu Man in Bangladesh
New Delhi:
The killing of a Hindu man amid ongoing unrest in Bangladesh has sparked strong reactions across India, with political leaders and activists voicing concern over the safety of religious minorities in the neighbouring country.
The victim, identified as 25-year-old Dipu Chandra Das, was reportedly attacked by a mob in the Mymensingh region following allegations of blasphemy. Das was employed at a local factory and, according to police accounts, was assaulted outside his workplace before his body was hung from a tree and set ablaze.
The incident occurred against the backdrop of violent protests in Bangladesh that erupted after the death of radical student leader Sharif Osman Hadi, which has led to widespread tension and clashes.
“A Shocking Act Of Brutality”: Priyanka Gandhi
Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi described the killing as deeply alarming. In a public statement, she said acts of violence based on religion or identity have no place in a civilised society and amount to crimes against humanity. She urged the Indian government to raise concerns with Bangladeshi authorities regarding the increasing attacks on Hindu, Christian, and Buddhist minorities.
Pawan Kalyan Recalls India’s Role In 1971
Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan also condemned the incident, recalling India’s sacrifices during the 1971 Liberation War. He said the ideals of peace and dignity that led to the creation of Bangladesh were now being undermined by repeated acts of violence against minorities.
Citing data from minority rights organisations, Kalyan stated that thousands of incidents targeting religious minorities have been recorded in recent years. He urged the Bangladeshi government to move beyond statements of condemnation and take concrete steps to restore law and order. He also appealed to international bodies, including the United Nations, to intervene.
Allegations Of Conspiracy Raised
Exiled Bangladeshi author Taslima Nasreen alleged that the attack may have been triggered by a workplace dispute. She claimed that a coworker accused Das of making offensive remarks, leading to mob violence. Nasreen further alleged lapses in police protection and questioned the role of law enforcement in preventing the killing.
She also highlighted that Das was the sole earning member of his family, which lacked the resources to seek refuge elsewhere.
Arrests Made By Bangladesh Authorities
Bangladesh’s interim administration has confirmed the arrest of seven individuals in connection with the lynching. Officials said special police units conducted raids across multiple locations to detain those allegedly involved in the crime. Authorities have assured that further investigations are underway.
Growing Concerns Over Minority Safety
The incident has intensified debate over the protection of minorities in Bangladesh, with Indian leaders calling for diplomatic engagement and sustained international attention to prevent further violence.
