Congress MP Shashi Tharoor’s convoy was allegedly blocked and a member of his security team was assaulted in Kerala’s Malappuram district on Friday.
The incident took place near the Thiruvalli Chellithodu bridge while the Thiruvananthapuram MP was travelling to attend an election campaign event in Wandoor.

Details of the Incident
According to initial reports, a group of individuals stopped the convoy and gathered around the vehicle. Visuals from the location show several people surrounding the car, with some raising slogans.
During the confrontation, a member of the MP’s security team was allegedly assaulted. However, no harm was reported to the MP.
Statement by Shashi Tharoor
Confirming the incident, Shashi Tharoor shared a statement on social media platform X, stating that his security personnel was attacked but is now safe.
“Truly touched by all the messages and calls expressing concern about the untoward incident last night when my security guard was attacked. He is well and I was untouched,” he said.
He further added that the campaign schedule continued without interruption.
“We carried on undaunted yesterday and concluded two more events as planned. Our ongoing programme remains unaffected,” he stated.
Police Action
Following a complaint filed by the security staff member, Wandoor Police registered a case in connection with the incident.
According to officials:
- Three individuals have been detained
- Two vehicles have been seized
- A non-bailable case has been registered against one accused, identified as Ummara, a native of Kalikavu
Further investigation into the matter is currently underway.

The incident comes amid ongoing election campaigning in Kerala. The state is scheduled to vote in a single phase on April 9, 2026, with the counting of votes set to take place on May 4, 2026.
