PCB Chief Mohsin Naqvi Faces Tough Questions Over T20 World Cup U-Turn

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief Mohsin Naqvi found himself under pressure after Pakistan officially confirmed it would play India in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, marking a clear U-turn from its earlier boycott stance. The development followed weeks of uncertainty and intense discussions involving the ICC and multiple cricket boards.

Pakistan are now set to face India in their group-stage clash on February 15, despite earlier indications that the team would not take the field in protest against Bangladesh’s removal from the tournament. The Pakistan government had initially supported the boycott, citing solidarity with Bangladesh.

However, the stance softened after a series of negotiations involving the ICC, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and cricket boards from countries such as the UAE and Sri Lanka. The reversal was officially confirmed on Monday.

Just before the announcement, Mohsin Naqvi attended a Pakistan Super League (PSL) press conference, where he was repeatedly questioned about Pakistan’s shifting position. Following the event, Naqvi was confronted by reporters seeking clarity on whether Pakistan had secured any concessions from the ICC during talks.

Responding candidly, Naqvi admitted that Pakistan had not gained anything for itself.
Hamne apne liye kuch nahi kiya,” he said, stressing that Pakistan’s stand was taken solely for Bangladesh.

Naqvi further indicated that a decision was imminent, saying, “Bas ab thodi der mein faisla ho jayega,” hinting at the impending confirmation of Pakistan’s participation. When asked if the outcome was positive, he responded confidently, claiming Pakistan always brings “good news.”

He also revealed that Bangladesh had formally requested Pakistan to play the match, suggesting that Bangladesh’s issues with the ICC had been resolved.
Tabhi unhone ye request ki hai,” Naqvi noted.

Following the confirmation, the ICC issued a statement emphasising unity and adherence to tournament commitments. The governing body said all members had agreed to respect the terms of participation and ensure the smooth conduct of the ongoing T20 World Cup.

Sources also confirmed that the ICC rejected three demands put forward by the PCB during negotiations. One of the key demands was the resumption of bilateral cricket series between India and Pakistan, which was turned down.

The episode has sparked debate among cricket fans and analysts, with critics questioning Pakistan’s initial hardline stance and the subsequent reversal. The India-Pakistan clash, meanwhile, remains one of the most anticipated fixtures of the tournament, both on and off the field.
